Don't say “we have a printer.” Say this instead.
This is the show notes companion to Episode 9 of Nail Tech Growth Lab. Listen (7 min) below.
The phrase that loses the room
The most common first attempt salon owners make sounds like this:
“Hey — we have a new nail printer now! It can print any design on your nails!”
Three problems in one sentence:
- “Printer” primes the client to think office equipment. Nobody wants office equipment on their nails.
- “Any design” overwhelms. Choice paralysis = no decision = she defaults to her usual gel.
- “Now” reads as a sales push, not a service offering.
The phrase that opens the door
The 1-sentence introduction
“I just started doing custom designs — want me to add a tiny one on your ring fingers today?”
Why this works:
- “Custom designs” is the service framing, not the equipment framing.
- “Tiny” lowers commitment. She's saying yes to one accent nail, not a full set.
- “Ring fingers” gives a specific, low-risk surface. She can hide it if she doesn't like it.
- “Today” is now, not next visit. Zero scheduling friction.
3 follow-up scripts for the most common responses
If she says “what kind of design?”
“Anything from a flower to a tiny photo — your dog, your kid, a logo. Want to show me your phone?”
If she says “how much extra?”
“$15 on top of what you're already doing. One design, two accent nails.”
If she says “maybe next time”
“No worries — next time grab a screenshot of something you like and we'll try it. Even just one nail.”
The “screenshot” close is critical. She's now actively scanning her IG feed between appointments looking for inspiration. You've installed the next conversation in her phone.
When NOT to introduce it
- During checkout. She's transactional. Save it for next appointment.
- To a client running 15+ minutes late. She's stressed. Don't add cognitive load.
- To a first-time client. Earn the second visit first. Introduce at visit 2 or 3.
The 30-day rollout
Week 1: Tell the regulars only. Pick your 10 most flexible clients and introduce it during their next visit.
Week 2: Film each yes. Apply the 3-shot framework from E004. Post one a day.
Week 3: New-client first-mention. By week 3 you've got real designs to show. New clients see the menu, see the photos, ask on their own.
Week 4: Build the library. Add 5–10 client-specific designs to your library based on what came up. See E005 for the full rollout sequence.
